Álvaro López, Jr. is a Mexican drummer, singer, and producer who was recognized as one of the top 10 drummers in the world by Modern Drummer magazine in 1993.
A devout Christian performer, López has toured with renowned artists such as José José, Daniela Romo, Yuri, Pedro Vargas, and Luis Miguel. He has also recorded music in both English and Spanish. In 1995, he won a Dove Award for Best International Group with Torre Fuerte. In 1997, he left Torre Fuerte to found Álvaro López & Res-Q-Band.
López is considered one of the most influential drummers in Latin America, excelling as a drummer, producer, and composer. He is the winner of a Guinness World Record and numerous international awards. As the founder of the musical group Res-Q-Band, he earned a Latin Grammy nomination for the production Sol Detente, which he produced himself.
López is also the founding director of the Mexican Institute of Music and Contemporary Art (IMMAC), an institution that attracts students from all over the world. He is the son of drummer Álvaro López Sr., who was described by Buddy Rich as the second-best drummer in the world—after Rich himself.
Although López began studying drums and music theory as a child, his professional debut came at the age of 14 when he was invited to accompany Emmanuel, one of Mexico’s most famous singers. In 1987, he went on tour with the greatest exponent of Latin American pop music, Luis Miguel. During this time, he befriended Héctor and Heriberto Hermosillo, who later shared their Christian faith with him after a personal crisis and a suicide attempt.
Together, the three left Luis Miguel’s band and formed the Christian group Torre Fuerte, which became one of the most influential Christian music groups of the 1990s. Torre Fuerte won the prestigious Dove Award for Best International Christian Group and toured extensively throughout the Americas.
In 1997, López left Torre Fuerte to establish his own project: “Álvaro López y Res-Q-Band.” To date, the band has released seven albums and is about to complete its eighth, all of which are available on streaming platforms.
López continues to perform in concert and jazz tours with Res-Q-Band, visiting countries such as Peru, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala, the United States, and most states and cities in Mexico.
